CIRA Honours Media for Promoting Infrastructure Good Governance

The Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (CIRA) has honoured journalists for their outstanding contribution to the promotion of good governance in public infrastructure management in Malawi.

The recognition was made under the Public Infrastructure Management Award category during the World Press Freedom Day commemoration, which took place on the 3rd of May in Salima at the Sunbird Livingstonia Hotel.

CIRA presented two awards under the category, one recognizing excellence in print journalism and the other in electronic media, as part of efforts to encourage investigative and public‑interest reporting on infrastructure development and governance.

One of the award recipients was Joseph Mwale of Nation Publications Limited, who won the print media award for his story titled “Delayed projects squeeze Malawians more.” The article critically examined how delays in public infrastructure projects lead to cost escalations, disrupt service delivery, and place an additional burden on Malawians.

Speaking to the press at a different occasion, CIRA Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Gerald Khonje praised the media for playing a vital watchdog role, noting that responsible journalism helps promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the construction and infrastructure sectors.

Khonje said recognising the media is part of CIRA’s broader mandate to promote ethical practices, accountability, and improved governance within Malawi’s construction industry, adding that informed reporting helps stimulate public debate and policy reform.

The World Press Freedom Day commemoration attracted journalists, civil society organizations, development partners, and government representatives, who reflected on the importance of a free and independent media in supporting democracy and national development.
