National Construction Day 2026 Celebrates Excellence, Innovation and Lasting Impact
The Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (CIRA) successfully hosted this year’s National Construction Day on the 3rd of July 2026 at the BICC, bringing together industry leaders, contractors, consultants, policymakers, development partners, and construction professionals under the inspiring theme: “People, Quality and Innovation: Building a Legacy.”
Graced by the Minister of Transport & Public Works, Hon. Jappie Mhango, MP, the event provided a platform to celebrate the achievements of the construction sector, recognize outstanding performers, and reflect on the role of the industry in driving national development through quality infrastructure and innovation.
National Construction Day attracted stakeholders from across the construction value chain, united by a shared commitment to advancing professionalism, quality standards, and sustainable growth within the sector.
In his opening remarks, Hon. Mhango emphasized the vital contribution of the construction industry to economic growth and national transformation.
“The infrastructure we build today becomes the foundation upon which future generations will live, work and prosper. We must therefore prioritize quality, innovation and professionalism in everything we do.”
The event featured exhibitions on emerging trends, skills development, technological advancements, and strategies for enhancing project delivery across the construction industry.
Speaking on the significance of the theme, CIRA Board Chairperson Eng. Dr. Peter Matipwiri said:
“A lasting legacy is not measured only by the structures we build, but also by the people we develop, the standards we uphold, and the innovations we embrace. That is why people, quality and innovation remain at the heart of our vision for the industry.”
One of the highlights of the celebration was the presentation of the Construction Excellence Awards. The Construction Excellence Awards were established by the Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (CIRA), and are designed to recognize and celebrate outstanding performance, innovation, and professionalism within the construction sector in Malawi. The further aim to honour companies, projects, and individuals who demonstrate exceptional achievement in project delivery, technological advancement, safety, and skills development.
They seek to inspire continuous improvement across the industry, encouraging stakeholders to adopt higher standards of quality, efficiency, and sustainability. The initiative also promotes public awareness of the critical role played by the construction sector in national development.
Presenting the awards, CIRA Board Chairperson Eng. Dr. Peter Matipwiri commended the winners for setting an example for the entire industry.
“Today’s award recipients have demonstrated what is possible when expertise, dedication and innovation come together. Their achievements raise the bar for the entire construction sector and inspire others to pursue excellence.”
Award-winning project, Creator Malawi Liverpool Research Programme Building owned by the Malawi Liverpool Trust, was built by S. R. Nichlous, with designs by and was supervised by FBW in partnership with Space & Time, and SFS Property & Bench Engineering; was recognized for their contribution to infrastructure development, economic growth, and community transformation.
Another memorable moment of the event was the recognition of distinguished industry veterans whose contributions have helped shape the construction sector over many years.
The Lifetime Achievement Awards celebrated individuals whose leadership, mentorship, and dedication have left an indelible mark on the industry. The awardees included Arch. Ben Chidyaonga, QS. Jonny Jameson Somba, Eng. Wellington Mandowa and Mr. Benjamin Themba Katola.
Accepting the honour on behalf of the lifetime achievers, Arch. Ben Chidyaonga reflected on the journey of the sector.
“This recognition is not only a personal honour but a tribute to the many professionals, artisans and workers who have contributed tirelessly to building our nation. We hope our journey will inspire the next generation to continue striving for excellence.”
Their stories highlighted the importance of commitment, integrity, and continuous learning in building successful careers and a stronger industry.
As the construction sector continues to evolve, speakers stressed the need for collaboration among all stakeholders to tackle emerging challenges and seize new opportunities.
Closing the event, Hon. Jappie Mhango encouraged industry players to remain focused on delivering quality infrastructure while embracing innovation and sustainable practices.

National Construction Day once again demonstrated that the strongest foundations are built not only with concrete and steel, but with vision, integrity and a shared commitment to leaving a lasting legacy.
