Architect Ben Chidyaonga is a distinguished architect with more than three decades of professional practice and leadership in the built environment. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) from the University of Northeast London and a Master of Architecture from South Bank University, London. In 1990, he was registered with the Architects Registration Council in the United Kingdom and admitted as an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). He became a registered architect in Malawi in 1994 and a member of the Malawi Institute of Architects in 1995.
From 1994 to 2000, he served as Design Architect in the Ministry of Education’s Project Implementation Unit, where he developed the standard primary school prototype that supported Malawi’s Free Primary Education programme. In 2000, he established ABC Design Architects in Blantyre.
His notable projects include the Kamuzu College of Nursing Campus in Blantyre, the Infectious Diseases Unit at Zomba Central Hospital, the Malawi Parliament Building, National Bank of Malawi projects, an NBS Bank building in Lilongwe, the MASM Head Office, and Keza Office Park in Blantyre.
Beyond practice, he has served as Chairperson of the National Construction Industry Council, now CIRA; a member of the Board of Architects and Quantity Surveyors; and President of the Malawi Institute of Architects. He has also mentored future architects through lectures and continuing professional development at MUBAS. He continues to practise through ABC Design Architects and Lakeshore Architectural Studios and is developing a podcast to promote architectural discourse in Malawi and the region.
